I am 21?

May 31, 2009

What’s your age? Someone asked when I was taking a stroll at a shopping mall with my family. I jokingly said 18. She gave me a weird look. Then few days later, more people are asking for my real age. This happens because I was featured at a blogger’s column at Breeze magazine issue 16.

As the official photographer, I didn’t expect to be featured there… when they asked for my details, I thought it’s just for the record. However, I am glad that I was featured here, in this magazine. What excites me most (though it’s some error done by the editor) was my age and DOB. My actual DOB is 1st Jan… I’ll leave it to you to guess my birth year.

I wish I could provide them with a better article.

I was part of a team of photographers covering for this dinner at Hilton’s Grand Ballroom. Our most important assignment is to shoot one photo… Phua Chu Kang@Gurmit Singh greeting Datuk Wong. It was a tense moment for me, I guess same goes to the team… I kept aiming, pre focus on my target… and the moment both of them are together, I took the shot. I was glad my shot is selected as a special gift to Datuk. Check out the photos in the album later.

This is my first time at Phua Chu Kang live show. I just can’t stop laughing throughout the whole event…. it was so hard trying to shoot and laugh at the same time

As a long time fan of Phua Chu Kang aka Gurmit Singh, I was very excited when told that part of my photography assignment is to cover an interview session with him. I just don’t know what to expect at first when I saw him in person, so I snapped away, taking candid photos during the whole session.

Gurmit, being Phua Chu Kang, the interview session was so hilarious. He is such a funny man, with spontaneous one-liner that makes you laugh and want more of his jokes. I enjoyed every minute of the interview session. It was fun!

Site back online

May 18, 2009

Site was down for a few days… still waiting for a reply from hosting company. It’s back online tonight, will do a new post if it’s stable.

What gear would I take out during a photo shoot? First, it depends very much on what type of gears are there in one’s arsenal. Different photographers have all kinds of lenses, camera and flash. From a fast lens to kit lens, wide to tele zoom… there are so many possible combination. It also depends on the style of shooting too… so since there are virtually hundreds of possible answer, I will share what gear that I use for the photos in this posting.

Musical

Lighting plays an important role in a fashion show. A well placed stage lighting creates a good ambiance and it’s easy for a photographer to shoot too. For me, I like shooting with available light… unless there is no other choice then I’ll usually fire flash to get good exposure. On the 1st of May, I was invited to a Private Fashion show by The Spring Mall, with clothing sponsored by Esprit, Benetton and Padini. Invited guest gets to get up close to the stage, while shoppers still can view the show from the 1st floor.

Esprit

I simply love the organiser’s idea of putting up a cool photographer’s stand with an excellent distance from the stage. Prior to the event, I surveyed the distance from stage to the stand, and found out that my 85mm lens would be just perfect to do the job. There are 4 well placedĀ  floodlights (1 colour instead of the usual 6-7 colours), which will enable me to shoot without flash. Models walked with a rather fast pace, shutter speed has to be fast to freeze the models in frame. With ISO400, aperture set at f/1.8… freezing motion is not a problem. Metering is set to centre weight to get good exposure.

Padini

Of many fashion shows in Kuching so far, this is the best. Lots of clothings, good models, super nice stage and photographer’s stand, sweet backdrop and lovely lighting.
